The nights are drawing in, warm russet hues are rippling through our green outdoors and a refreshing crispness has returned to the air; autumn is here! Once again, it is time to celebrate this spectacular season in our homes by seeing what the autumn interior design trends 2017 can offer.
We spoke to our Creative Director Stacey Sibley to hear her expert insights into the latest autumn design trends.
1. Rich jewel tones
Right at the heart of the autumn 2017 interior design trend are rich jewel tones.
“We’ve seen a real inclination for soft, muted tones over the spring and summer. All that’s going to change in the autumn, as bright jewel colours burst onto the interiors scene. Colours are all about the rich warmth of teals, burnt oranges, shaded spruce and autumn maple. These are bold tones for uplifting interiors – we’ll be brightening up the indoors as the outdoors dims in preparation for winter.” Stacey Sibley, Creative Director, Alexander James Interior Design
Tip: Peruse this superb selection of vibrant jewel tones to give you inspiration. Pair these bold colours with raw brass and burnished metallics to add warmth to your design.
2. Plush, patterned fabrics
Lavish, patterned fabrics add a luxurious sense of comfort to this autumn’s rich jewel colour trend. New collections brim with plush velvets, organic linens and ethereal sheers.
Stacey references the new Zinc Textiles Bonheur velvet as an example. The plush velvet is interspersed with multi-tonal textural bouclé yarns to form a deconstructed houndstooth design that is both sumptuous and graceful.
Tip: Hugely popular this autumn 2017, incorporate velvets into your design. Think: blush pink sofa with raspberry velvet cushion. Combine with geometric or large-scale botanical patterns to get the look.
3. Large floral prints
This autumn 2017 we’ll see a continuation of summer’s love of nature, with a shift into more rich, floral patterns.
“Florals this autumn will be larger than life – picture rich velvet cushions printed with large scale, expressive tulips, apple blossom and roses. The Designers Guild’s new cushions epitomise this trend. We’re also seeing floral prints in wallpapers and fabrics that look like old master still life paintings, allowing us to incorporate these into the home in exciting new ways – it’s a modern twist on classical prints.” Stacey Sibley, Creative Director, Alexander James Interior Design
Tip: Keep nature in the home with large floral prints on walls and cushions (not small ditsy designs, but beautiful, big prints). Reflect your personality and style with these innovative and inspiring designs to create real impact.
4. Furniture in Bold Colour
As the nights lengthen, this autumn 2017 trend invites us to add warmth to our interiors with raw brass touches and large furniture in bold colour.
Julian Chichester’s exquisitely sculpted, teal vellum Deneuve Cabinet is the ultimate example. This beautifully shaped cabinet wrapped entirely in vellum with sculptural double turned ends and textured aged brass detail pairs perfectly with autumn’s favoured tones.
Tip: Be bold or go home is the 2017 interior design theme – go forward confidently in punctuating your design with dark emerald green sofas, burnt orange chairs and large scale geometric furniture pieces in glamorous ruby red.
5. Accessories with texture
Blend the vivid jewel colours of this autumn 2017 interior design trend with interesting textures into your smaller accessories.
Healthfield & Co’s emerald Amelia table lamp offers the perfect example. Part of their Zoffany collection, these bespoke, hand-crafted lamps feature volcanic fit glass and antique brass detailing adding a beautiful sense of texture to a design.
Tip: Introduce layers of texture throughout your design, particularly in your lamps and accessories.
6. Expressive Art
“Finally this autumn, don’t forget the importance of art. If you’re nervous about how to introduce jewel tones, opt for something like Trowbridge Gallery’s Lovebird Feathers. It’s a stunning piece that shows the bright, delicate plumage of the world’s smallest parrot. The close-up of the rainbow spectrum of colours is truly beautiful and adds a wonderful sense of texture as well as colour.” Stacey Sibley, Creative Director, Alexander James Interior Design
Tip: Express the vibrant personality of the autumn 2017 interior design trends through artwork – incorporate the rich jewel hues into the paintings your choose to complete your design.
